La petite histoire de la grande Ford Mustang :
En 1960, pour Lee Iacocca, directeur général de Ford, il est clair que la génération du baby-boom va avoir d'autres attentes que ce que propose Ford à cette date, le modèle populaire la Falcon... est bien insipide ( mais se vend très bien auprès d'une clientèle peu exigente).
En 1962 un dream car ( concept car) est réalisé en 3 mois : une barquette à moteur central avec chassis tubulaire et carrosserie en fibre de verre, avec un nom qui claque : Mustang !
Le 8 octobre 1962, cette barquette équipée d'un petit V4 de 100 CV ( celui de la Taunus vendue en Europe) fait l'ouverture du Grand Prix de Watkins-Glen avec Dan Gurney au volant, pour la parade. 1er coup de Pub. pour Ford, désormais marque « jeune et dynamique ».
Mais pour autant la barquette 2 places n'est pas ce que cherchent les jeunes qui veulent 4 places pour emmener les amis avec eux. Henri Ford II fait confiance à Lee Iacocca et lui donne la date butoir du 09 mars 1964 pour sortir le nouveau modèle. Il a un budget de 40 millions de dollars et choisira son équipe.
Le dessin de la voiture sera à coup sûr l'élément clef, Iacocca choisit Dave Ash déjà auteur de la Cougar. Pour les soubassements on prendra ceux de la Falcon et du moteur V8 de 260 ci de sa version « sprint ».
Le 3 octobre 1963, toujours à Watkins-Glen une version proche du modèle à venir est présentée, elle est un peu lookée « futuriste » de manière à faire parler d'elle, et le nom de Mustang est confirmé dans la foulée en novembre.
En octobre 1963 des journalistes sont conviés à l'usine de Dearborn ( siège de Ford ) pour être briefé sur le concept : voiture pour les jeunes, le couples, les familles, 4 places voiture avec options de personnalisation et un tarif imbattable.
